A former underground Cu-Ag-Au-Zn mine located in the NW¼ sec. 20, T1N, R14E, ¼ mile NW of Jewel Hill, ¾ mile N of the Castle Dome {Pinto Valley) Mine and WNW of Miami, on private land. Discovered 1875. Now included in the Castle Dome property. Operated by Old Dominion Co. until 1929; bought out by Miami Copper Co. in 1931; later bought by Cities Service Co. First produced 1906. Owned and operated by the Cities Service Co.
Mineralization is an ore body that is bunchy beneath 100 feet and tabular above 100 feet. The main vein has a curved course, NE-trending at the E end, and NW trending at the W end. Below about 100 feet the vein passes into mineralized porphyry. Associated rock units are the Lost Gulch Quartz Monzonite and diabase. Ore control was porphyritic quartz monzonite in a small fault block. Ore concentration was oxidation in the upper 100 feet. Hypogene mineralization is the same as that of the Castle Dome Mine. The mineralization period is also the same.
Area structures include the Jewel Hill Fault, 1/4 mile NE, which faults Paleozoic sediments and Tertiary Whitetail Conglomerate to the SW against Precambrian Pinal Schist to the NE. Another NW-trending fault with associated off-shoots goes through the mine area. Diabase is faulted against quartz monzonite, which forms a fault block and also outcrops in a large pod west and south of the mine. The pod extends south to the Castle Dome Mine.
Workings in 1903 included 5 tunnel levels, three with cross cuts and drifts, and some smaller shafts. The main tunnel is N-trending for 215 feet before the main workings are encountered. Workings achieved a depth of 106.68 meters.
Production was included under the Old Dominion prior to 1931 in ABGMT-USBM files. 14,300 tons were reported in 1906 to 1908. Ore grades in the period 1906-1936 were 5.2% Cu, 0.06 oz/ton Au, and 3.4 oz/ton Ag. After 1936, grades fell abruptly.
