The Mangan #1 Mine(SE NW Sec. 3 T46N R29W) opened as an underground mine in 1915 and produced ore sporadically until 1928. The underground workings eventually merged with those of the adjacent Hopkins Mine. The site was converted to an open pit mine in 1949 by the Hanna Coal Company, passing on the operation to the Zontelli Brothers Company in 1953. The ore in the Trommald Formation at the mine was extremely manganiferous, making the ore and waste stockpiles of interest to collectors long after the mine closed. Sec 3 T46N R29W.
