The Pietrineri mine is included in the famous Monte Amiata mercury ore complex, at present completely abandoned. Mining operations at Pietrineri started in 1902; any operation at the deposit completely ceased in 1975. Cinnabar mineralization is stratified and columnar in fracture at the tectonic contact between liassic limestone and Eocene Ligurian flysch.
