Known as Valle Castelli since the 9th century, this village owes its existence to the exploitation of the nearby mines, especially iron and silver (Pollone mine, Monte Arsiccio Mine). In the 19th century, mining production was an object of international interest.
In July 1825, the poet GiosuΓ© Carducci was born there, the son of a doctor hired by a French mining company. The poet's name was associated with that of the village and his birthplace, which is now transformed into a small museum, has been declared a national monument.
