Group of sulphur mines located NE of Caltanissetta. Mining in the area began in the middle of the 1800s. The mines still active in the 1950s included the concessions named Gessolungo (see coordinates), Gessolungo Cacciagalline (37°30'46"N, 14°5'4"E), Gessolungo Xiboli (37°30'49"N, 14°5'6"E), Gessolungo Maurelli (37°30'36"N, 14°5'9"E), Gessolungo Costa Lenza (37°30'52"N, 14°5'15"E), and Gessolungo Lacagnina (37°30'39"N, 14°5'21"E).

Gessolungo mine is infamous for a terrible gas explosion that killed 65 miners on November 12, 1881 (55 others survived). This mine is known for producing specimens of "strawberry sulphur" of a typical red-orange colour, in complex, intergrown crystals on white drusy calcite.

Furthermore, a small halite lens has been detected at the northern rim of the Gessolungo mining concession.
