On Modderfontein 74 IR farm. In 1873 this farm was 2,974 hectares, by 1887 the Main Reef was discovered.
After several failures the mine was re-launched in 1895 as the New Modderfontein mine and was successful
until the closure in 1952. Uniquely, it also produced diamonds.
