Lichtenburg is a defunct district.

In 1926 a diamond was found on the farm Elandsputte. There was a diamond rush with more than 100,000 diggers over the next year. By 1935 the rush was burnt out after 7 million carats of diamonds were found in alluvial deposits of gravel.
