The ores of the Cobalt-Gowganda region occur around the periphery of a 60 km diameter basin. Petruk (1971, p. 77) divided it into the following areas that run counter clockwise around the basin from the south east to the north west: South Lorrain Township, Cobalt Area, Casey Township, Elk Lake Area, Miller Lake Area, Gowganda Lake Area.
The complicated history of the showings, claims, properties, and mines of the region will likely never be sorted out. Most specimens are labelled only "Cobalt, Ontario"
Ores were discovered in 1903 while building the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railroad. Silver production reached it's peak in 1911 with the production of 31 million ounces of silver.
Of historic note, ore and concentrate from this area was refined in many places in Ontario other than this area, for example: Deloro, Ont. (Deloro Mining and Reduction Campany), Copper Cliff,Ont., Orillia, Ont.(Canada Refining and Smelting Company), Thorold, Ont.( Coniagas Reduction Company 1912), Township of Crowland just outside Welland, Ont. (Metals Chemical Company), Swansea now a suburb of Toronto, Ont.(Swansea Smelting and Refining Company).

Benjaminite (TL)

Type Locality:
Description: The mineral was first studied by Shannon (1924), who concluded on the basis of chemical data only that it was a new species and proposed the name benjaminite. Nuffield (1953) re-examined the type specimen and determined that Shannon’s “benjaminite” was actually aikinite. Nuffield, however, noted a minute amount of another phase in the type specimen that deviated from Shannon’s description and analytical data. He described it as a new species retaining Shannon’s name for the mineral. Owing to erroneous data, benjaminite was briefly discredited (1973-1974). The type specimen from TL1 and specimens from two Canadian localities were investigated by Nuffield (1975) and Harris & Chen (1975), and data derived from all three localities were used in a joint proposal to IMA CNMMN for the revalidation of the species.
