Structure: Stank-Fault Pre-Mineral And Post-Mineral Faults
Alteration: Silicification
Deposit: The stank mine is open to a vertical depth of about 1,200 ft. Through an inclined shaft to 700 level, a winze from the 700 to 1200 level. In 1944-45 corosscuts were extended west to the yellow scheelite bed on the 300 and 400 levels. The stank mine is on stank-humboldt belt along with the codd, yellow scheelite, keyes, george, springer, and humboldt mines. ; info.src : 1 pub lit; 2 unpub rept; 3 field observ in lower levels of stank mine the pre-mineral fault plane appears to have rotated by the post-mineral fault system.the stank segment of the humboldt bed is traceable by surface outcrops from the western margin of the springer stock, at the foot of stank hill, through the saddle west of stank hill, across stank canyon and upslope to the south, where it-is cut and offset by the stank fault south of the codd mine workings. Stank fault dips SW, and the southern extension of the tactite bed therefore moves to the south with depth in the mine. To the north, the northern boundary of the bed is formed b-y the contact with the springer stock. This contact also dips to the south giving the stank tactite body the shape of a parallelogram that rakes to the south. Although parts of the orebody were of very good grade, large blocks of low-grade, unaltered limestone and marble occur within the limits of the orebody. Underground, the orebody is cut by 2 major granodiorite dikes, and an andesite dike, As well As both pre-mineral and post-mineral faults.
Deposit type: W skarn
Development: Stank found a heavy white mineral (scheelite) while panning for silver in what was later named stank canyon. He ignored it at that time but recalled his findings when in 1917, tungsten became a sought after war material. He and others returned to the district and staked claims on stank hill. These early claims and others to the east on sutton hill were acquired by pacific tungsten company, who mined it productively until consolidation in 1925 by the nevada massachusetts company, who developed and mined it through a 2-compartment inclined shaft and winze. Operations ceased in 1958.
Geology: In lower levels of stank mine the pre-mineral fault plane appears to have rotated by the post-mineral fault system.
