American Ore Co. Mine South
Sec 16 & 22 T25N R34E
Structure: Gabbro Is Part Of A Major Lopolithic Body With Intrusive And Extrusive Phases
Deposit: Magnetite is found in steeply-dipping sub parallel veins up to 4 meters wide. Some magnetite is localized in a fissure which intersects a vein. Some disseminated magnetite in wallrock adjacent to veins. Lenses of ore 1-3 ft wide. Iron ore is associated with deuteric alteration of the lopolithic mafic igneous complex.
Deposit type: Skarn Fe
Development: Property was purchased by american ore co in 1950 and leased in 1959 to consolidated minerals corp, who produced ore in 1959-1962. Discovery of large high-grade iron ore deposits in australia in the 1960's essentially removed the main export markets for nevada iron ore, which led to the closure of this and other mines by 1970. District was idle in 1985. Small reserves.
