Montréal is located on the Saint Lawrence Lowlands Platform, a thick sequence of Upper Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentary rocks. These rocks, mainly limestone, have been quarried since the beginning of the 18th century for building stone, crushed rocks for roads, and the manufacture of lime and cement. This has exposed the Cretaceous-age dykes and sills containing the minerals for which such localities as the Francon quarry have become famous. Mont Royal in the center of the City of Montréal is a Cretaceous-age pluton composed of gabbro, nepheline diorite and and nepheline syenite. It and the dykes and sills are part of the Monteregian Hills Petrographic Province, as are Mont Saint-Hilaire, Mont Bruno and the Saint-Amable sills east of Montréal, and the Oka Complex west of Montréal.

It should be noted that the localities listed here under Montréal are all on the Island of Montréal which includes a number of municipalities other than the City of Montréal.

The referenced Montreal area geological report (Clark 1972)covers 2163 square km, bounded by longitudes 73 degrees 30 minutes and 74 degrees 00 minutes, and latitudes 45 degrees 15 minutes and 45 degrees 45 minutes.

Description: The name magnesiohastingsite was introduced by Billings for the magnesium-dominant hornblende, first investigated by Bancroft & Howard (1923) from Montreal, and the amphibole studied by Larsen & Billings (Billings 1928) from Iron Hill, Colorado. The end-member status was confirmed and the name was modified under the current nomenclature to magnesiohastingsite (Leake 1978, Leake et al. 1997).
