Quartz vein in Pleasant Mountain syenites. Discovered in float on the Warren Farm about 1863. Bedrock discovery in April 1894 by George Howe. Famous discovery of Royal Purple amethyst was made when amethyst was still a scarce gem. Total discovery of fine specimens was probably less than a few dozen. The tall tale of Kaiser Wilhelm II having a $10,000 faceted amethyst from this discovery originated with a traveler who went to Germany on a vacation trip and was asked by Howe to report back to him whether he could find out about a good gem that he knew of having been faceted from one of his crystals. The traveler could not have seen the Kaiser's private collection, but apparently told Howe a "white lie" to save face.
