The Alto Ligonha District covers a fairly large area historically. There is essentially no important mineral locality within the immediate area of Alto Ligonha town. The region is noted for many world-class gem-bearing and rare mineral bearing granite pegmatites. There are a few metallic ore deposits as well as several important emerald mines.

Large district with gem-bearing granite pegmatites. Some authors sub-divide the district as it has become better known.
Alto Ligonha is presently a "Posto Administrativo" in the Gilé District. Gilé it self is also a "Posto Administrativo".
