Frankfort meteorite (Frankfort [stone] meteorite), Franklin Co., Alabama, USA

The Frankfort (stone) meteorite is one of sixteen witnessed falls of the Howardite class of Achondritic (Differentiated) Stony Meteorites. The proper name of the meteorite is 'Frankfort (stone)' to differentiate it from the 'Frankfort (iron)' meteorite found near Frankfort, Kentucky in 1866. Frankfort (stone) is like all howardites, a breccia whose principal components are various eucritic (pyroxene-plagiclase) and diogenite clasts dominated by pyroxene-plagiclase and orthopyroxene components, respectively.

In addition to the predominant pyroxene and plagioclase, minor amounts of other silicates and opaques have been reported. Small amounts of metallic iron are also reported, but not mineralogically characterized in the references provided.
