The Douglass Houghton Mining Company organized in 1846, becoming one of the first mines to operate in the Flintsteel River area. By 1852, the company had sunk four shafts working four levels with drifting. In addition, the company built ten dwellings and a mill with eight water-powered gravity stamps. Approximately 30 tons of copper were produced before 1864, when the company was sold and the mine changed its name to the Henwood. The mine was worked through the 1870s with additional drifting and deepening to the sixth level, but little is known after this point as to how long the mine operated. As Henwood, the mine produced approximately 45 additional tons of copper.
