Mining district located on the Southern slope of the Cantabrian Mountains, North of Leon and Palencia Province.

Carlin-type sediment-hosted hydrothermal late-Variscan gold deposit (strong fluid-rock interaction under nearly hydrostatic conditions : P below 30 MPa, low-salinity fluid).
As, Sb, Cu-Ni-Co, Au, Hg, U mineralizations hosted by limestones interbedded with Namurian-Westphalian bituminous shales.

The major structural structural complex is a shear duplex developed between two major late-Variscan faults (Leon fault and Ventaniella faults).
The Salamón deposit is located on the Late-Variscan Leon major fault, between the basal thrust of the Ponga unit and the Leon fault, near Porma fault.

The mineralization, mainly hosted in limestones and bituminous shales of Namurian-Westphalian Lena group, is related to numerous small stocks and dykes of basic/intermediate composition.

The mineralization is in a local zone of distension, with brittle deformation, where reactive Westphalian limestones form the wallrocks.
The limestones are silicified, decalcified and dolomitized.

The mineralization shows three phases :
1) Jasperoid and with fine-grained arsenopyrite, pyrite, marcasite and chemical gold
2) Sulphides (As, Pb-Sb, Hg, etc.), coarse-grained, replacing stage one deposits
3) Supergene mineralization with native gold

600 000 tons ore (7 g Au / t ore).
