The Setubal river is the major river in the area, and the alexandrite production has been from its tributary creeks.

A rush of mining (up to 5,000 miners) for alexandrite occurred in 1975 and lasted to about 1987. During this period 2 kg of alexandrite were recovered from alluvial workings. Since then production is only a few carats per year of gem quality material. One of the best cat's eye stones is from this region.
