The General Custer Mine was located in 1976 by James Baxter, Elden Dodge and Morgan McKim. They named the vein in memory of General George A. Custer, a popular figure at the time. Speculation and litigation held up the development of the mine until 1879, when a group of San Francisco capitalists gained title to the claim and formed the Custer Mining Company. In 1880, the General Custer Mill was erected at the upper end of Custer. Milling 900 tons of ore a month, the mill produced close to $1,000,000 in gold and silver bullion from the Custer vein in its first year of operation. The property produced between five and eight million dollars before closing in 1888.
