A former Au-Mn occurrence/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 4 and in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 11, T7N, R12E, MDM, about 6.65 km NNW of Volcano, S of the Deadman Fork Dry Creek (5½ miles by road ESE of Fiddletown). Discovered in 1940. Owned by the U.S. government (1974). Operated by G. W. Vose, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Located in an old hydraulic Au mining property.
Mineralization is a residual Mn deposit hosted in Pliocene andesite and sedimentary breccia. Low-grade Mn oxide (psilomelane) occurs in lateritic soils beneath a lava cap of andesitic breccia. The Mn oxides cement a regolithic breccia with quartz fragments. The manganiferous material is mostly below 10% Mn, although a few individual specimens were seen which might run 30% Mn. No commercial ore observed. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface openings comprised of a few small, shallow pits and one cut 14 feet long, 3 feet wide and 10 feet deep.
Analytical data results: Mn ore <10%.
