A clay deposit/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 31, T6N, R10E, MDM, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) SE of Ione, ENE of Firebrick (on the W side of the former Amador Central railroad tracks), on private land. Operator Western Refractories Co. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.

The Newman Red clay is 18 to 20 feet thick in this pit with a bed 1 to 3 feet thick of white clay at the top and 10 to 15 feet of stripping of clayey sand above that. The white clay above the red mottled clay is mined along with the Newman Red. Local rocks include Eocene nonmarine rocks, unit 1 (Northern and Central California).

Workings include surface openings comprised of an open pit.

The pit was started in 1927 and has been active continuously since then. The Newman Red is not used at Western Refractories Co. plant in Ione, but is shipped to ceramic plants elsewhere. There are 2 pits in the NE¼ on the topo map.
