A former lode & placer Au occurrence/mine located in the S½NE¼ and in the N½SE¼ sec. 34, T24N, R3E, MDM, 2.3 km (7,600 feet) SSW of Forks of Butte, along Butte Creek (1.5 miles WNW of the Toadtown site). The property consisted of 34 acres. Operated by E. N. Understock and Mattye M. Understock. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
NOTE: MRDS file #10028408 contains the following note: "GRAVEL REPORTED TO CARRY $2 TO $3 A CUBIC YARD IN THE PART NEAR BEDROCK. 34 ACRES," alluding to the presence of a placer Au deposit. The same file also mentions the 2 adits to the "veins," alluding to a drift mine.
Mineralization is hosted in slate. Controls for ore emplacement included schistosity planes. Part of the host rock was described as spongy brown limonite-stained quartz formation, which exhibits schistosity. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Workings include underground openings comprised of 2 adits to the veins. One adit is 2,000 feet long with 1,000 feet of drifts and raises. A later adit was driven 90 feet higher and to the SW. The first 200 feet was driven through schist, the next 200 feet through shale or slate.
Production information: Gravel reported to carry $2 to $3 (period values) per cubic yard in the part near bedrock.
