Chatfield placer, Mokelumne Hill, Mokelumne Hill District, East Belt, Calaveras Co., California, USA

A drift placer Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 23, T5N, R11E, MDM, about 3.65 km (about 2 miles) SSW of Mokelumne Hill (town), on the divide between Poorman Gulch and Chili Gulch. Owned by Union Mines, Inc. Operated in the 1930's. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located on the Concentrator paleochannel. The large dump contains fragments of black slate bedrock, pebbles of schist, andesite and quartz. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).

Workings include underground openings comprised of a vertical, 60 foot deep shaft. The gravel was washed in a 4½ by 15 foot scrubber-trommel and short sluice box.
