A placer Au occurrence/hydraulic & drift mine located in the S½ sec. 18, T5N, R12E, MDM, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) SSE of Mokelumne Hill (town), NE of the McSorley Ranch and W of the Lombardi Ranch. Operated prior to 1873 (hydraulicked), and during the period 1874 to 1882, and from 1885 to the 1900's and in 1916. Operated as the "Mammoth Mine" beginning in 1879. The Veith and Pellaton Mines were worked as a unit in the 1`900's and in 1916. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located on the Deep Blue Lead paleochannel. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include underground openings comprised of at least drifts.
