Locality for the ornamental stone Goodletite (Ruby rock).
Goodletite is a generic term for a local rock, consisting of ruby, sapphire and tourmaline crystals in emerald green fuchsite, with margarite, and chromite. Like nephrite in the area, it is found as loose boulder float, but far rarer, and correspondingly expensive. No 'mother lode' source has yet been discovered. The rock is named after William Goodlet, who recognised it as an unusual stone when visiting the Rimu gold workings in 1892.
Goodletite has also been found at Kaniere, the Mont D'Or Mine at Ross, Olderog Creek, Whitcombe Valley, and the Taipo River.
The boulders contain ruby-sapphire corundum, chromian muscovite, margarite, tourmaline, chromian chlorite, Zn-Mn chromite, Mn-Ti magnetite, with rare serpentinite rinds. Some of the larger boulders show zoning, from a red-blue corundum-dark green margarite core to an intermediate zone of emerald green Cr muscovite, to an outer zone of grey green Cr chlorite in contact with serpentinite.
Colours range from colourless to deep ruby red-carmine, to pale blue to dark blue and violet. The micas have a significant paragonite component. The tourmaline occurs as veins, vein outgrowths and large poikilitic crystals replacing the mica matrix.
Corundum occurs as dark red-blue aggregates of anhedral-euhedral crystals set in emerald green micaeous matrix, often containing olive-green tourmaline veins, or black tourmaline crystals.
