A placer Cr occurrence located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) NW of Flagstaff Hill (coordinates of record) and 1.3 km (0.8 mile) WSW of Shirttail Peak (Rattlesnake Bar District), at the former mouth of Granite Ravine (former Granite Bar) with the North Fork American River (now inundated beneath the Folsom Reservoir). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not reliably stated.
NOTE: USGS MRDS file #10163549 presents geographic coordinates and T&R values that are in apparent error, placing this locality in sec. 12, relatively far inland from the Folsom Reservoir. MRDS file #10029645 places it in sec. 20, beneath the reservoir, and consistent with the description of this deposit and how it was exploited (dredge).
Mineralization is a placer chromite deposit hosted in stream gravels.
Workings included surface dragline dredge operations.
The dredge was working the gravels until closed down by the war on 12/1/42. The only reliable information regarding the content of the gravel was from a 400 pound sample of bank run gravel which yielded 15 pounds of concentrate conaining 24.9% Cr2O3 and 39.5% Fe. A non-magnetic fraction representing 17% of the concentrate contained 45.2% Cr2O3 and 23% Fe. Approximately 180,000 cubic yards of gravel remained to be worked when the dredge closed down.
