A former Cr /occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 14, T8N, R9E, MDM, about 2 miles SE of Latrobe, on patented (private) land (private lease). Owned by William and Laura Eglopf (100%), California (1976). Operated by the El Dorado Chrome Company, lease 1953, California (1976) and/or Edward Hadsel and Jerry Grant, sub-lease (1953), California (1976). First produced in 1918. Idle since 1953. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Probably the location is the open pit working shown near the S line of the section on USGS quadrangle Latrobe, California (1950).
Mineralization is hosted in Amador Group harzburgite, Late Jurassic dunite and pyroxenite. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains). The ore body is irregular in form, strikes N20E and dips E and/or 80W at a width of 6.1 meters and a length of 60.96 meters. Ore body No. 1 is disseminated, tabular; ore body No. 2 is lenticular; ore body No. 3 is other. The primary mode of origin was magmatic segregation. Primary ore control was lithology and second control was other. Wallrock alteration is moderate (carbonitization, silicification). Local alteration includes serpentinization. There are 2 potential ore locations: at greater depth along the trend of N20E from the main workings; and, the area W of the main ore trend where exposures trend nearly perpendicular to the trend of the main ore zone. The mine lies in a narrow, NW-trending ultramafic body.
Local geologic structures include strongly developed joint planes which strike N20-40E and dip steeply to the SE.
Workings include surface openings comprised of 2 open pits, the larger being 200 feet long and 10 to 30 feet wide with a 25 foot face at the N end.
About 3,000 tons of ore from property milled during WWI and in 1942 2,000 tons of ore were produced. During the first half of 1953 about 100 tons of ore per day were produced for a few months with an average tenor said to be 14% Cr2O3.
Analytical data results: average ore = 15-20% Cr2O3, Cr:FE = 2.7:1.0. Concentrates were 48% Cr2O3.
