An asbestos occurrence/mine located in the SΒ½ sec. 27, T18S, R13E, MDM, 0.7 km (0.4 mile) WNW of Wright Mountain (coordinates of record), on federal land (located claim; fee ownership). Discovered in 1905. First produced in 1962. Owned by Tenneco Oil Co. (100.00%), Arizona (1981). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in the New Idria serpentine mass. The ore body strikes N65E and dips 01W at a thickness of 152 meters and a depth-to-top of 1 meter. The ore body involves a shear zone and is tabular in form. Primary ore control was lithology with faulting as the secondary control. Wallrock alteration is slight. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 3 (Coast Ranges and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface openings comprised of a large open pit.
Production data: Produced a total of 1,327,686 metric tons of ore containing 80% asbestos during the period 1962-1973. Consistently produced ore with about 80% asbestos.
