A former Zn-Ag-Cu-Pb occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 23 (and in sec. 25 ?), T9N, R18W, SBM, 9.6 km (6.0 miles) ENE of Gorman (Los Angeles County) and 9.8 km (6.1 miles) E of Lebec. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a replacement deposit hosted in limestone. The ore body strikes N30E and dips steeply NW at a width of 1.83 meters. The limestone is pre-Cretaceous in age, pale bluish white in color where it is not stained by iron oxides, and medium- to coarse-grained. It contains intrusive bodies of Mesozoic biotite granite. The limestone body crops out over an area of several square miles W & S of the Kelso Mine. The Zn mineralization appears to have penetrated the limestone along fractures. The two principal fractures are 4 feet apart and a third fracture is about 30 feet farther NE of them. Controls for ore emplacement was fractures. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous granite. Local rocks include limestone of probable Paleozoic or Mesozoic age.
Workings include underground openings. There are 3 adit - lower, middle and upper. The lower adit, which is the northeastern-most, is 60 feet long and trends S30W. The middle adit is a crosscut 40 feet to the S at a point 150 feet SW and 60 feet higher than the lower adit. The upper adit is 125 feet above, and 250 feet SW of the middle adit. It is 600 feet long and trends S48__ (?). In 1942 it was caved at 200 feet from the portal.
Several tens of tons of ore produced in 1943 contained 17.5% Zn, 1.97 ounces Ag and a few pounds of Pb & Cu.
Analytical data results: 30 to 33% Zn from two closely spaced fractures.
