A former W-Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 21, and in the NE¼NE¼ sec. 28, T29S, R34E, MDM, 4.4 km (2.8 miles) WSW of Sorrell Peak (coordinates of record) and 4.7 km (2.9 miles) S of Claraville, S of Grouse Meadow and WSW of Mace Meadow, on private land within a National Forest area. The property comprises 97 patented acres. Owned by N. V. Franceshi, Los Angeles, California (1949- ). Operated during the period 1924 to 1942. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Adjoins the Gwynne Mine on the SW.
Mineralization is hosted in granite. The ore body strikes N30E; N-S, dips 40SE, 50E at a thickness of 0.61 meter and a width of 1.22 meters. There is a series of veins. The N vein is 1 to 2 feet thick. Another vein occurs 20 feet S. The scheelite is high-grade (up to 60%) and occurs in irregular bunches. Free gold is associated with pyrite. Soil on surface of the outcrop contains much weathered country rock and fragments od scheelite in a placer deposit. Gangue minerals include quartz & pyrite. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include surface and underground openings. A 500 foot adit trends N30E. A 110 foot raise was driven to surface. A 35 foot winze was sunk 30 feet from the portal. The lower adit is 550 feet long on the vein and 130 feet below the upper tunnel. A 93 foot winze was sunk 410 feet from the portal. There are 3 open cuts. Workings on the Simon totaled 900 feet of drifts, adits & winzes, all caved by the 1940's.
Production data are found in: Troxel and Morton(1962).
Ore mined averaged $15 (period values) Au/ton.
Analytical data results: $15 Au/ton, scattered bunches of scheelite contained 60% WO3. Placer deposits contained $0.25 to $0.50 WO3. 50 sacks of W ore containing 50% WO3 were mine din 1941. A mill was constructed in 1953 but no production resulted. The Simon claim had small production.
