A former lode Au mine located in sec. 34, T3S, R17E, MDM, 1.9 km (6,100 feet) SSE of Cat Town, along Solomon Gulch, on Bureau of Land Management wilderness land (Merced River Wilderness Study Area). Operated by F. E. Ryberg (timeframe = ?). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a vein/dike deposit hosted in volcanic rock (aphanitic), slate, schist, and chert. The ore body strikes N40-45W and dips 75NE, at a thickness of 15.24 meters and a length of 1,609.3 meters. The deposit crosses the T&R section from the NW to the SE. The dike is 30 to 50 feet thick. Gold occurs in rust-colored pockets in albitite adjacent to quartz stringers & enclosing slaty wall rocks near contact. The ore is apparently confined to a narrow contact zone less than 6 to 7 feet thick, but commonly 3 feet thick. The best ore occurs in the oxidized zone. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 30.48 meters.
In view of the parallel lines on either wall of the albitite dike, which is traceable for over 1 mile, from the length and persistance of the stopes, and the known high-grade of the ore in pockets in this district, indicate that the yield must have been large. The most northerly workings were being operated by Ryberg in September, 1955.
