A former pumice deposit/mine located in secs. 32 & 33, T5S, R33E, MDM, 6.5 km (4.1 miles) S of Chalfant, near the Inyo County line. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
The deposit is a horizontal bed of white pumice, 12 to 15 feet thick, with overburden of red tuff, 25 to 75 feet thick. The pumice fragments are angular, grayish-white and range in size from 1/16 inch to 2 inches in diameter. Both pumicite and silica are present in thin beds. Local rocks include Quaternary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 2 (Long Valley Caldera) and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.
Workings include surface openings/operations comprised of an open pit.
Commodity used in making soap and cleanser compounds, also for stucco work, white cement and in acoustic plaster.
Production information: Many thousand tons mined as early as 1927.
