An asbestos-Au occurrence/group of claims/mine located in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 2, sec. 11, and in the NW¼NW¼ sec. 12, T17N, R10E, MDM, 1.4 km (0.9 mile) W of Washington, N of the South Yuba River, on National Forest land. Discovered before 1914. Owned by Dr. J. H. Stark, Frank F. Smith, and Judge James Smell. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains) and/or Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 6 (Northwestern Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of 2 adits at 115 feet each, a small quarry, gloryhole, 110 feet of trenching and 2,680 feet of diamond drill holes.
Operated under lease by the Sierra Asbestos Company during the period 1917 to 1923 and 8,000 tons of rock were mined and milled. Short fiber asbestos was produced with very little of it more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) long. Assessment work only was accomplished until 1951, when the property was core drilled by Philip Carey Company under Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) loan.
