Åtvidaberg (and Bersbo fields) are among the historically important copper districts in Sweden.
About the oldest parts very little is known, some legends say mining started already in the 13th century- but no proof exist. On the other hand it exist privileges for the Miners from these years; 1413 (King Erik av Pommerania) -1468 King Karl Knutsson- 1513 Sten Sture and 1527 King Gustav Vasa.

In the middle of the 18th century interest came back and the mines was in full swing until 1902.
