A former lode Au mine apparently located in sec. 25, T34N, R7W, MDM, 4.2 km (2.6 miles) NNW of Shirttail Peak (coordinates of record), in Canyon Hill Gulch, a tribuatary of Clear Creek. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
NOTE: The MRDS file states that this locality is "IN CANYON CREEK GULCH 6 MI. N. FRENCH GULCH OFF DEADWOOD ROAD." This places it in Shasta County. The coordinates provided by that file also place it in that area of Shasta County. The T&R value; however, places it in Trinity County. The closest localities to this one are in T33N R 6 or 7W. Adjustment of the T&R value to T34N R7W would bring it in line with the description of its location. Also, there is no "CANYON CREEK GULCH" in the area described but the coordinates provided place it on Canyon HILL Gulch, another apparent error in the MRDS file. Canyon Creek is a relatively large stream in Trinity County; however, it is nowhere near the area being described. Finally, the MRDS file states: "UTM EST. W 1/2. SECTION PROJECTED. LOC EST. FROM REFERENCE HIGHLY UNCERTAIN," alluding to the uncertainty of its location.
Mineralization is hosted in greenstone and slate. The ore body strikes N70W
and dips 35NE at a thickness of 1.83 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included a fault. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 1 (Eastern Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings. Open cuts expose the deposit for 300 feet along the vein on surface. Underground is a 56 foot deep shaft with a crosscut.
No production record was found. The ore was said to be free-milling.
