The Agate Harbor Company was organized in 1846 after “four veins showing promise” were discovered on the property. One of these veins appeared to follow a series of ancient mining pits for over a quarter mile along strike. Three shafts were sunk along the veins beginning in 1854. During this time, a 1,000 pound mass of copper was said to be recovered. A small smelter was constructed in 1855. In 1857, the French Mining Company (Clark Mine) purchased the mine and worked the shafts until at least 1890, when the Agate Harbor Mining Company purchased the mine and began working the “old shaft” sunk in 1855. Mining reports state that in the 1890’s, workers were finding decent silver along with copper. Some mining is thought to have occurred until about 1900, when the property was sold at a sheriff’s sale. Today, very little remains which make it a very difficult location to find. Once found, copper and silver are the main minerals to be had, along with some decent quartz.
