North Macedonia, officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. Between September 1991 and February 2019, it was officially the Republic of Macedonia and was commonly known as Macedonia.

Not to be confused with the Greek regions West Macedonia, Central Macedonia and East Macedonia and Thrace.

North Macedonia is divided into 8 statistical regions which, however, exist solely for legal and statistical purposes.
The municipalities (in Macedonian општини, opštini; singular: општина, opština) are the first-order administrative divisions of North Macedonia. In August 2004, the Republic of Macedonia was reorganised into 84 municipalities and, in February 2013, into 80 municipalities. Most of the current municipalities were unaltered or merely amalgamated from the previous 123 municipalities established in September 1996; others were consolidated and their borders changed.
