The Barrows Mine was the frist mine to open on the South Range of the Cuyuna District. The South Range is separated from the North Cuyuna Range by a major thrust fault and has several geological and mineralogical differences. The Barrows was opened by the Hanna Coal and Ore Corporation, first shipping ore in 1913. The deposit was in the Proterozoic Trommald Banded Iron Formation. It was an underground mine with a 160 foot deep shaft, primarially working ore at the 160 foot level. The hanging wall intersected a massive, ophitic and partially chloritized diabase body.
