Setting:
The Prospect mine is a granite pegmatite located 6.6 km (4.1 miles) NNE of Ramona, in the W2NW4SW4 of Sec. 5, T.13S, R.2E, SBM. A claim to the deposit was made on September 15, 1904, by H. A. Warnock and John P. Sutherland, of Ramona.

History:
The deposit was developed in the early 1900's by a small 25 foot open cut made on the east side of the road in Hatfield Canyon, approximately 200 feet from the current Highway 78. The deposit was described by Kunz as a pegmatite ledge about 6 feet in width, poorly crystallized, with most of the gems being found as "frozen into the ledge"; few pockets were said to have been discovered. Weber described the pegmatite dike as about 4 feet thick, striking northward for an undetermined distance, and dipping about 45 degrees west.

These workings were reported to have produced gem quality spessartite, some greenish tourmaline, and black tourmaline crystals as long as 6 inches.

Mineral List

7 valid minerals. 2 erroneous literature entries.

Detailed Mineral List:

β“˜ Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
β“˜ 'Almandine-Spessartine Series'
β“˜ Grossular
Formula: Ca3Al2(SiO4)3
Description: Erroneously reported as "essonite", and sometimes referred to as "hyacinth", these garnet group minerals are in fact the species spessartine, as later identified and confirmed by several sources. The spessartite here often forms a series between spessartine and almandine.
β“˜ Grossular var. Hessonite
Formula: Ca3Al2(SiO4)3
Description: Erroneously reported as "essonite", and sometimes referred to as "hyacinth", these garnet group minerals are in fact the species spessartine, as later identified and confirmed by several sources. The spessartite here often forms a series between spessartine and almandine.
β“˜ Microcline
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
β“˜ Muscovite
Formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
β“˜ Orthoclase
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
β“˜ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
β“˜ Schorl
Formula: NaFe2+3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH)
β“˜ Spessartine
Formula: Mn2+3Al2(SiO4)3
β“˜ 'Tourmaline'
Formula: AD3G6 (T6O18)(BO3)3X3Z
Description: Kunz mentions greenish tourmalines
