The Val Malenco serpentinite is about 1-2 km thick and covers an area of ca. 170 km². The assemblage of ultramafic to mafic rocks and ophicarbonates was moderately buried in late Cretaceous to temperature and pressure estimated at 450 °C and 6 kbar. The subduction-related metamorphism lead to the transformation of the chrysotile-bearing serpentinized peridotites to antigorite-schists with a mineral assemblage of antigorite + olivine + diopside + chlorite + magnetite with Ti-hydroxylclinohumite, brucite and sulfides as accessory phases.
Locally, the serpentinite is cut by different types of veins, and some of these veins contain olivine, chlorite, magnetite, titanian hydroxylclinohumite and diopside, others show different mineralogies.
In addition to the regional events, there is a metamorphic contact zone towards the Bergell intrusion.
