Carrol County bedrock is primarily complex early Cambrian to Late Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Piedmont Province. Metamorphism has converted these metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks to schists, gneiss, marble and quartzite. Meta-gabbros and metamorphosed ultramafic rocks have been converted to talc and amphibole-chlorite schists. These rocks are hosts of the iron, copper and cobalt deposits of the Sykesville Mining District, which were worked from the mid 1700's until early 1900's. The County is the type locality for carrollite, a copper-cobalt-nickel sulfide.
