Ordinary chondrite (H4)
Find, 1938; 4.8 kg
A weathered meteorite stone was plowed up in 1937 and recognized as a meteorite in 1938. Inspections reveal chondrules, clasts and Fe-Ni grains within a dark matrix transected by weathered veins. Total iron (24. wt%), equilibrated olivine (Fa20) and nearly equilibrated low Ca-pyroxene are all characteristic of H-group chondrites. Mineralogically, the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine accompanied by pyroxene along with minor troilite and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite and small amounts of copper and ilmenite are also present.
A cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age of 6.5 Ma has been reported. This suggests that Garnet may be a fragments of an intermediate parent body (IPA) which has produce a large fraction of the current stream of H-group meteoroids in earth-crossing orbits. [Almost half of recovered H-group chondrites have CRE ages in the 6-10 Ma range.]
As with many meteorites recovered with the assistance of Harvey Nininger, a significant portion of the Garnett meteorite is now at Arizona State University's Center for Meteorite Studies [1372.9 g in 2017].
