Ancient Pb-Zn(-Ag) mining district, in which the Romans exploited Ag-bearing galena ore. As late as the 5th century, the mines were abandoned by the Romans, but were exploited in the Middle Ages for iron, and spurred the construction of many foundries nearby.
Modern mining stopped in 1984.

Located on the western foot of the Peñas de Aya massif.
Since 1995 part of the Peñas de Aya (Aiako Harria) National Park.
