A sand/gravel pit located just off US41 in Mandan, Michigan. Some datolite, "float copper," and coral fossils can be found here. The best area for datolite collecting is near the rim of the pit alongside conglomerate cobbles. The datolite here comes in many colors, but most have been completely "weathered" to white with most crumbling into a fine powder. Some good datolite can be found "protected" in their rock hosts. The datolite found here is beautiful, but is also quite rare and it can be frustrating having a softball sized datolite crumble in your hands! It is private property and as of August 2020, being actively worked.
