A large county in central Washington State, USA. Grant county is the 4th largest county in the state of Washington based on area. The county is comprised of 7,230 km2 (2,791 mi2).
Weather is moderate, but typically dry, with ~19.0 cm (~7.5") of precipitation annually. Mean average temperature is 10 degrees C (50.2 degrees F).
The geology is diverse with features that are world famous, including the Dry Falls and The Grand Coulee created during the ice-age.
The primary mineralogy collecting matrix consists of basalts (Columbia River Flood Basalts), intrusive granitic plutons (Coulee Dam Intrusive Suite), and ice-age alluvial deposits. Minor sedimentary deposits also exist and some are exploited commercially. Most notable are the Diatomaceous Earth mines near the Quincy area.
The alkaline nature of the area also created many 'salt' flats, ponds, and lakes that were commercially exploited in the early 20th century. These provide additional collecting opportunities, though greatly diminished by the influx of fresh water via the irrigation systems of the Columbia Basin Project.

Cleavage - not tested (previous breaks appear to have good cleavage but since this is a crystal mass tests on individual crystals was not attempted)
Brittle, breaks fairly easily and appears to have an irregular break on individual crystals
Solubility - No reaction in cold HCl. Effervesces in hot acid and shows a distinct orange halo around the mineral. Complete dissolution in a few hours with no residue.
This specimen was discussed at length in Mindat ID forum. It was believed to be stilbite but the complete dissolution (lack of silica gel residue) and the orangeish 'halo' around the piece as it dissolved (believed to be iron residue) showed this not to be stilbite. That coupled with the dirth of zeolite materials in the Columbia Flood Basalts show this to be siderite. References: |
