Deposits of residual limonite/goethite in quartzite NE of Emmaus. Magnetite.
Locally referred to as "Valley Ore", the Bog Ore deposits were mined from open pits along the Northern slope nearer the base of South Mountain. Magnetite, locally referred to as "Mountain Ore", was mined through development of shafts/stopes, with access to the shaft works near Emmaus (Emaus).
Mining in the region began in 1809, with the greatest activity taking place from the end of the civil War to about 1885. During this period, ore was mined and processed at the Donaldson Iron Company (ca. 1850, Fisher & Donaldson ca. 1880's). Mining activities in the region finally closed in the early 1900's.
