The Reservoir Cabonga Terrane is an allochtonous slab metamorphosed under granulite grade conditions and transported onto the migmatites of the Grenvillian Parautochtone. The Cabonga area is part of the Verendrye provincial wildlife reserve.

Besides the claims of GLP Mining on the east shore of the reservoir and a copper-nickel property of CopperOne to the north of the terrane, the area is mostly open to collectors. No historial mining records could be found except for the Renzy Lake Mine in the south west corner of the Verendrye reserve. This site is currently undergoing reclamation.

Description: Present in several exposed outcrops of paragneiss and Quartzite all around the Cabonga Dam. Specimen up to 1.5cm in size can sometime be removed from the matrix intact but in general they are heavily fractured. Another occurence was located at the Hydro-Quebec quarry to the north of the Verendrye reserve showing red almandine up to 10cm in size in a paragneiss. Unfortunately they are also heavily fractured.

Description: Spinel is ubiquitous at Cabonga as it is an aluminium rich granulite grade terrane. The best specimen are found in coarse to pegmatitic marble dykes. Blue is the most common color followed by red. Rare pink Zn bearing spinel up to 10mm also exists. Some of the marbles are very rich in spinel but unfortunately specimen bigger than 3 or 4mm are very rare. In the marble spinel is often associated with apatite and also included in the apatite.
