Kenya adopted a new constitution on 27 August 2010 and this came into force after the general elections on 27 March 2013. This resulted in the provinces being replaced with the following 47 semi-autonomous counties, some of which have the same name as the former provinces: Mombassa; Kwale; Kilifi; Tana River; Lamu; Taita/Taveta; Garissa; Wajir; Mandera; Marsabit; Isiolo; Meru; Tharaka-Nithi; Embu; Kitui; Machakos; Makueni; Nyandarua; Nyeri; Kirinyaga; Murang'a; Kiambu; Turkana; West Pokot; Samburu; Trans Nzoia; Uasin Gishu; Elgeyo/Marakwet; Nandi; Baringo; Laikipia; Nakuru; Narok; Kajiado; Kericho; Bomet; Kakamega; Vihiga; Bungoma; Busia; Siaya; Kisumu; Homa Bay; Migori; Kisii; Nyamira; and Nairobi City.
These 47 counties now form the first-order divisions of Kenya.
Under the constitution these county boundaries may only be altered by Parliamentary resolution in order to reflect, for example changing populations.
Prior to 2013, Kenya comprised the following eight provinces (mkoa singular, mikoa plural in Swahili): Central; Coast; Eastern; Nairobi; North Eastern; Nyanza; Rift Valley; and Western. These former provinces were subdivided into districts (wilaya). Many of the counties are equivalent to the old districts. The former provinces have been retained as non-hierarchical localities as many texts and references refer to these and the fact that the changes are fairly recent.
Note: East Africa Protectorate (also known as British East Africa) was an area of East Africa occupying roughly the same terrain as present-day Kenya; it was controlled by Britain in the late 19th century.
