Brownville Maine was once known for it's slate roofing tile manufacturing. In 1899, there were three active quarries.

Brownville's first recorded account of actual commercial slate production was by the Bangor & Piscataquis Slate Company in 1844. This location was near the village and later known as the Crocker Quarry, then simply the Brownville Quarry.

Adams Merrill opened a quarry on the Brownville/Williamsburg town line in 1846. His quarry was later known as the Monson Maine Slate Quarry.

A third slate quarry was known as the East Brownville, later the Highland Quarry.

An 1882 atlas shows other quarry properties that may have also been owned by these three main companies.
