The Lake Johnston area is 150 kilometres west of Norseman. The gravel Norseman-Hyden Road goes through the area. It contains for the most part undulating semi arid heathland, with Salmon Gum woodland in low lying areas. A number of large salt-pans are south of the road.

The locality name was chosen due to the presence of the large Lake Johnston salt-pan near the mines listed, and that the deposits are within the Lake Johnston Greenstone Belt.

There are no towns or human settlement across the approximately 300 kilometres between Hyden and Norseman, apart from the nickel mine localities listed, about half way across.
