A former large output underground Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag occurrence/mine located in the center of sec. 16, T23S, R24E, in upper Ramsey Canyon, where Pat Scott and Wisconsin Canyon enter Ramsey Canyon, on private land. Produced 1902-1950. Owned at times, or in part, by the Lake Superior & Western Development Co., Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., and the Phelps Dodge Corp. This was the first Calumet & Arizona mine. Other operators included the Butte & Arizona Mining Co. and the Coronado Investment Co.
Mineralization is partly oxidized copper and minor lead-zinc ores in irregular replacement bodies associated with strong fracturing and faulting in relatively unaltered Devonian Martin and Cambrian Abrigo Limestones. Ore control was dikes and sills near the ore bodies and faulting and associated brecciation. Ore concentration was bornite replacing pyrite. Alteration was gossan with Mn and Fe oxides induced by hydrothermal metamorphism. An associated rock unit is the Sacramento Hill Stock.
Local structures include common pre-mineralization tilting and pre-mineralization faulting. The main pre-mineralization fault directions are N10W to N40E, S30W to N50W.
Workings include a shaft(s), a 200 foot tunnel driven in the early 1900'S. Three principal adits, including this tunnel, pits, and small prospect drifts.
This was the first Calumet & Arizona mine with over 1.5 million tons of ore produced since 1902.
